Package Success Kit & Swarm Trap/Bait Hive Lure
Whether you're concerned about your new bees absconding or you want to hang swarm traps around your town, this is a valuable combo that can either help you score some free bees and/or keep the bees you've invested in. Research and anecdotal evidence has show that bees are significantly more likely to be attracted to and stay in a swarm trap/bait hive or newly constructed hive if brood comb and/or lemongrass oil are used.
What's included and how is it used?
You'll receive one piece of brood comb that's at least 2 square inches in size, a piece of wire to install it, and a cotton ball with food grade lemongrass essential oil.
The brood comb adds the scents of a previous hive to the cavity. It makes the hive/trap smell like home. The comb also acts as a starter for the queen. Rather than needing to wait of the new bees to start building comb, the queen can start laying as soon as she'd ready. The rest of the hive can start extracting wax and build comb attached to and around this starter set.
To install the comb, all you need to do is tie it, using the wire provided, to your top bar and put it toward one end of the hive. You can rest at ease, the brood comb comes from treatment free top bar hives and has been stored in the freezer to preserve it's scents.
The food grade lemongrass essential oil adds a scent that is very similar to the queen's pheromones. Used together, you have a set that encourages the hive to find the cavity and remain their. The oil is poured into a cotton ball and then kept in a plastic bag. You may install this in several ways. Two of the most common methods are to either rub the interior surface of the hive with the oil or to keep it in the plastic bag on the floor of the hive, opening the bag just a little bit.
