What will I learn in the Workshop?

The objective of this course is to introduce attendees to the process of small-scale, ethical meat production for your personal homestead or backyard. The goal is to educate individuals on the importance of the ethical treatment of animals while still providing families with a healthy, sustainable, local source of meat. Even if you do not have much acreage, you will be surprised how much meat can be produced on a typical grass filled backyard. 

While several livestock options will be discussed, the main focus will be on chicken and meat rabbits. Attendees can expect to learn:

  • Different options for livestock 
    • Equipment needed
    • Pros and cons 
    • Care and management 
  • Tools of the trade
  • Processing and butchering
  • Food storage 
  • Pasture management for chickens and rabbits
  • Breeding schedules for rabbits
  • Maintaining rabbit breeding stock
  • Rabbit manure garden fertilizer

Attendees will receive documents including some of our favorite recipes.
