What will I learn in the Workshop?
The objective of this course is to introduce attendees to the process of small-scale, ethical meat production for your personal homestead or backyard. The goal is to educate individuals on the importance of the ethical treatment of animals while still providing families with a healthy, sustainable, local source of meat. Even if you do not have much acreage, you will be surprised how much meat can be produced on a typical grass filled backyard.
While several livestock options will be discussed, the main focus will be on chicken and meat rabbits. Attendees can expect to learn:
- Different options for livestock
- Equipment needed
- Pros and cons
- Care and management
- Tools of the trade
- Processing and butchering
- Food storage
- Pasture management for chickens and rabbits
- Breeding schedules for rabbits
- Maintaining rabbit breeding stock
- Rabbit manure garden fertilizer
Attendees will leave with a packet of information, including some favorite recipes.
